Only Three More Rain Barrel Workshops This Season!
The last rain barrel workshops of the season will be offered Saturday May 8th at 9 a.m. (nearly full, register right away) and 1 p.m. and on Friday May 21st at 1 p.m. at Bluebird Gap Farm, 60 Pine Chapel Road. These workshops, a partnership among the Hampton Master Gardeners, Bluebird Gap Farm, and the Hampton Clean City Commission, teach participants how to make rain barrels, and at the end of the workshop participants will have rain barrels ready to take home and set up. The workshop includes the 50-gallon (approximately) plastic barrels, the conversion hardware, and volunteer assistance at $40 per barrel, cash or checks payable to Hampton Master Gardeners. YOU MUST REGISTER TO ATTEND! To register, contact Cris Ausink at causink@hampton.gov or call 727-1158.
Rain barrels are an important tool for conserving water and saving money, because water captured in rain barrels can be used to water landscapes and to perform various outdoor tasks. According to www.savingwater.org, one inch of rain falling on a square foot of surface yields approximately 0.6 gallons of water. How many square feet of roof cover your house? Use of rain water reduces our reliance on the area reservoirs for water, saving money for rain barrel owners. Rain barrels also help keep storm water in your yard, rather than sending it down the storm drain to the nearest creek or the Chesapeake Bay. This helps reduce strain on municipal storm drain systems.
These fun, informative workshops are rain or shine. Please bring $40 in cash or a check made out to Hampton Master Gardeners, a lock or crescent wrench, a flashlight, and work gloves to the feeding shed behind the Bluebird tower. We provide the pre-drilled barrel, and all the hardware. The barrel is a 50-55 gallon plastic olive or pickle barrel, so please make sure you have a vehicle with sufficient cargo capacity to carry it home after the workshop.
For more information about the workshops or rain barrels in general, contact Cris Ausink at causink@hampton.gov, 727-1158.
